Debate Dropout

I didn't watch the debate last night. Not sure if I will find the time to watch a tape, either. Instead, I caught Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and crew at the Meadowlands, a fundraiser for MoveOnPac and ACT. The highlight finale was all of them singing, with Eddie Vedder, "People Have the Power," the Patti Smith tune. Irony of ironies--that was and is Ralph Nader's campaign theme song. And in 2000, Vedder was at Nader's Madison Square Garden super-rally singing it. Times do change.

The debates...

I watched all of the debates and found myself getting distracted by the simultaneous conversations happening on the Internet. I found the commentary from the American public to be more informative than anything either Bush or Kerry said. Even the "town hall" style debate appeared scripted. I think it speaks volumes as to the state of our politicla process that I can't get excited by either of the candidates, no matter how many ways I look at them. At this point I will vote for the candidate who will do less harm to the country over the next four years, terrorists or no terrorists.

Negative campaigns

Cam--It's been awhile since people got to vote FOR a candidate they were excited about, especially for president. Both because the process tends to make these guys very cautious, and also because each side does a deliberate job of driving up the other guy's negatives--in the hopes of depressing his voters.

Online simultaneous conversation during these live events interests me a lot. It's distracting and entertaining, and sometimes enlightening. I wonder how many people are participating in them.
